The Complete Delivery Day Packing List for Dad - Created by Parents of 3

By the founders of DAD BAG · Delivery Day Prep · 6 min read
After three deliveries of our own, we noticed the same thing every time: Mom had a carefully curated hospital bag. Dad showed up with a phone charger and a prayer. We built this list, and eventually an entire brand, to change that.
Delivery day is one of the most significant days of your life. You're about to become a Dad. And yet, almost nothing out there is designed to help you prepare for it. The advice is almost always about Mom, as it should be, but Dad matters too. He's going to be in that hospital for hours, possibly days, and he needs to show up ready.
This packing list was born from experience - three real deliveries, three times figuring out what we wished we'd brought, what we forgot, and what the hospital absolutely could not provide. We put it all in one place so you don't have to learn the hard way.
"Showing up prepared isn't just practical - it's how you show up for your partner when it matters most."
The Full Delivery Day Packing List for Dad
Every item on this list earned its spot. Nothing is filler. Here's exactly what to pack, broken down by category.
Clothing
- Daily outfit x2-3 You may be there longer than you expect - always overpack clothes.
- Pajamas x2 Comfortable sleep matters, even in a hospital chair.
- Hoodie or jacket Hospital rooms run cold. This is non-negotiable.
- Underwear
- Socks Pack an extra pair - cold floors, long halls.
- Shoes
- Flip flops for the shower Trust us on this one.
- Hat Your DAD hat comes in the bag for a reason - wear it proud on day one.
Toiletries

- Travel shampoo
- Travel body wash
- Deodorant
- Contact case
- Contact solution
- Glasses
- Hairbrush or comb
- Razor
Pro tip: Pre-fill your toiletry bag at home and leave it in the DAD BAG so it's always ready to go.
Essentials
- Driver's license or ID You'll need it for hospital paperwork and registration.
- Insurance card Have a photo of it on your phone as a backup.
- Copy of birth plan (if applicable) Know the plan so you can advocate for your partner.
- Prescriptions Don't assume the hospital pharmacy will have what you need.
Practicals
- Blanket - trust us Hospital blankets are thin. Your own blanket makes a long night livable. (Yours comes embroidered.)
- Pillow - trust us The recliner chair Dad sleeps in was not designed for comfort.
- Towel - trust us Hospital towels are tiny. Bring your own.
- Reusable water bottle or travel mug You'll want hot coffee and cold water at the same time.
- Healthy snacks Cafeteria hours are unpredictable and vending machines get old fast.
- Chargers Phone, watch, earbuds - charge everything the night before and pack all the cables.
- iPad or laptop For the long waits, early morning hours, and keeping yourself sane.
The To-Do List Before You Leave
Packing the bag is only part of it. Before you head to the hospital, make sure these three things are done (they're the ones dads most commonly forget in the rush of the moment):
- Install the car seat Do this at least two weeks before the due date. Many fire stations offer free car seat inspections - it's worth it.
- Fill up the gas tank Simple. Often forgotten. Keep it above half as you approach the due date.
- Pack and have the DAD BAG ready to go Keep it by the door from 36 weeks on. When it's time to go, you grab it and you're ready.
"The blanket, pillow, and towel categories all say 'trust us' - and we mean it. These three things will make the difference between a Dad who's exhausted and uncomfortable and one who's actually present and rested enough to support his partner and meet his baby."
Why This List Exists
We created DAD BAG after our third child because we realized the problem didn't get solved after the first or second... it just kept happening. There was nothing out there for Dad. No curated bag, no thoughtful list, no product that said: you matter in this moment too.
This packing list is included in every DAD BAG bundle because we believe preparation is a form of love. When Dad shows up ready, truly ready, it changes the entire energy of the room. He's present. He's calm. He's got what he needs. And that matters more than most people realize.
Every item in the bag, from the oversized neoprene duffle to the embroidered blanket to the DAD hat, was chosen with that moment in mind. The moment you first hold your baby and realize everything has changed.
Dedicated to Dad.
